From the research I've done I think Public Art can range from permanent large scale sculptures such as Anthony Gormley’s ‘Angel of the North’, to Banksy’s stencilled graffiti images on walls to smaller temporary installations such as the those created by Illegal Art.
Public Art must be accessible to all and within the art world it signifies a specific working practice, often implying site specificity, community involvement or collaborations. Public Art refers to any work that has been designed and intended for display within the public domain, whether it is within internal or external spaces.
I believe Public Art is an expression of the place where is resides. A piece of sculpture can increase the value of a place and the people who occupy it. Personally, I prefer interactive Public Art as it feels more ‘public’. Not only do the general public benefit from the final piece but they also contribute to the finished project which I think brings out a sense of pride and achievement within people.
